Thank you for the advance word on the DVD release of Brownlow and Gill's magnificent documentary HOLLYWOOD. I hope a US release will follow soon.

Me too! Last year, I heard from a source close to the project, it was being worked on, so very glad it is finally here. So far, it appears to be just the UK, but I will keep an eye out of the US/Canada version. Like yourself, I have been waiting for this too...

This is great news! I hope this bodes well for the release of the "Thames Silents" silent films (restored by Brownlow/Gill and scored by Carl Davis) on DVD as well. I have heard rumors that a new Buster Keaton DVD set from the UK may include the unequaled Thames Silents versions of "Our Hospitality" and "The General". If anyone knows any more details on this, please post it.

Paul, here is what I found from DVD Times:

The Buster Keaton Chronicles, released February 2006 -includes:
Our Hospitality (1923) – 70 minutes
Directed by former Keystone actor Jack Blystone and Keaton himself, the film centres on respective heads of the Canfield and McKay families as they try to settle an old score, but by killing each other, they merely perpetuate the old feud. Among the many gags is the train ride that zig-zags around obstacles, a wild chase through the mountains and a hair-raising rescue at a high waterfall.

And
The General (1926) – 84 minutes
This film has been voted one of the ten greatest movies of all time in a recent Sight & Sound poll and it is a master class in silent movie-making. Set during the Civil War and based on a true incident, Keaton stars as a Southern railway engineer who has only two loves in his life – his train and belle Annabelle Lee. An impressive collection of silent comedy stunt gags, Keaton gives the Union raiders quite a chase and his engine figures prominently in one of the most memorable chase scenes ever filmed for the silver screen. This feature also contains a new score by legendary composer Carl Davis previously unavailable on DVD.

Hope that is the one you are looking for... L

Does anyone know if the DVD is ever going to come out? It's been deferred for over a year now. Such a pity, and very short-sighted, if rights issues prevent it from being reissued or rebroadcast. Already two generations have missed out on it - and many more probably will.

To this time, the copyright issues are the main reason this DVD collection has been placed on hold. Some of the copyrights expired before this was released, causing it to be pulled off the market.

Until those issues are resolved, this collection will remain off the television and off the shelve as a DVD collection.

This series not being viewed by a new generation right now does hurt, because it created more silent film fans than any one other project.

Fans would love to see this DVD released, but until the legal matters are settled, it will remain off the market and only available in VHS.
