AUGUST 18th - Grand View Maybe Open for limited visits SOON! Grand View Cemetery maybe open for limited visits starting as soon as Sunday, August 27th. Link to August 17th story.

Here are a couple of new stories about Grand View. The first one concerns the city of Glendale looking into how they can try to open the cemetery for visitors. (LINK)

The second story comes from the mailbag from a local resident who lives by the cemetery and their story about the person who scaled the walls to get inside see their family gravesites. (LINK)

They are also taken in ideas to help come up with a solution to the problem. The fear is, the cemetery could be razed for property development, if no buyer can be found to run the operation.

We like to thank everyone who has visited Edna the last five years. New stories and projects are in the works, so more to come in the years ahead...

August 3, 1920 - During Mildred's visit to New York

Mildred Harris Chaplin, who is stopping at a local hotel, denied today that she brought suit for divorce from her famous husband, Charles Chaplin, moving picture comedian. "I have signed no papers for divorce action", she stated. "I simply instructed my attorneys to bring suit for separation."

Mrs. Chaplin spoke very highly of her husband.

"There was no particular trouble," she said. "We just couldn't get along." My husband was not made for marriage. He is a man who should devote all his time to work. He is so nervous and irritable when working on a new picture that it is impossible to get along with him. He is a wonderful man, brilliant, but erratic."

During the marriage of Charlie Chaplin and Lita Grey Chaplin, a party was held at Chaplin's house in Beverly Hills. Mrs. Chaplin decided to have an unplanned party on her own and invited her friends to her home. Chaplin walked in on the party, and to kindly say it, was not pleased. One of the guest was Baron and Baroness De Precourt, who would not talk about the evening in late 1926...

Still refusing to discuss details of the party they attended which split the Charles Chaplin household, the Baron and Baroness De Precourt left San Francisco today for the east.

"I can say nothing about it," the baron emphasized. "We were guests of Mrs. Chaplin and were entertained in her home. Certainly no gentleman can discuss what occurs in the residence of his hostess".

The Baron did deny that it was a "wild party".

Asked if intoxicants were served, he said: "Why, this is a dry country. What could we have had to drink under such conditions?"

"No, I cannot discuss Chaplin's attitude, either. Perhaps, he was nervous."

Edna Note: Edna grew-up with parties at her home in Nevada as her mother and sisters loved social events. At Edna's LA home, parties with friends and family were common and some were unplanned. Just one of the differences between Edna and Charlie.

Misquote about Edna

Recently, an Edna fan pointed out some changes on the Wikipedia page on Edna. They sent me the information they saw. One was a misquote from a book called 'Slings and Arrows' where author Robert Lewis speaks about the day Edna visited for the screen test in 'Monsieur Verdoux'. Here is a section from Lewis's book:

Lewis remembered Edna as "... extremely handsome woman, and she was faultlessly turned out from head to foot". Lewis continues "Removing her gloves, she picked up her test scene, and the two old friends (Charlie and Edna) started to read through their parts. She did very well, talking simply and intelligently and, in fact, she hardly needed to look at her script, having memorized the lines quite thoroughly". Next Chaplin moved Edna in a scene serving tea, while saying the lines.

Lewis clearly points out, "In the silent movies (Edna) had been used to illustrating points with movement". "Talking became an intrusion that was clearly upsetting her." Edna said to Chaplin, "What do you want me to do, Charlie, she pleaded at one point, act or talk?"

This quote from Lewis's book was re-written by the author on the Wikipedia site and is not worth repeating here. It made Edna sound much different than Lewis's original quote actually says. Maybe the Wikpedia author got it from another source and just repeated it. Whatever happen, the quote on Wikipedia is gone now, as another Edna fan has changed the piece, but it is how things get misquoted, and makes a person sound like someone they really aren't. So if you quote someone, find the original source and quote as written. It is better for everyone involved.

Edna Purviance in Portuguese

UPDATE JULY 18TH, 2006 - With Edna having many fans from around the world, I am please to announced the first Edna section to be translated into Portuguese. Edna fan, Daniele Rodrigues from Brazil, has just completed translating one of our Edna stories. It will be launched very soon for our Portuguese speaking fans.

Edna's Video Done!

Finally finished the video last evening for the Hollywood event at Cinecon Labor Day Weekend. Except for a few test viewings on different players and some touch ups here and there, it is finished. I will be placing up new video title information and a special announcement on Edna's site soon.

We have heard from Cinecon this morning and the exact time is being finalized at this time. It will be on the weekend, leaning toward Saturday, but will keep you posted.

(The video we originally showed in May to Cinecon is going to be the full interview version, while this new video is a somewhat edited down interview to fit in the new information and introduction on Edna. It is 56 minutes long. This new version was created with a more general audience in mind, who may know nothing on Edna. It includes items never released about Edna and a few things known by longtime fans.)
