CDS

Charlie Chaplin bailed out of the stock market a year before the crash of 1929. He felt if average people were in it, time to get out of it. But he had a feeling things were not right.

After the 1929 crash, it took three years and more stock market falls, before the full effect was in place. It wiped out Edna's and many of her families money by 1932.

In comments I have placed an article about why it is so hard for Paulson to be straight in his answers to congress on this mess many people created, and will be saddled with, bailout or not.

It is called about CDS (Credit Default Swap). A popular derivative used to make uncontrolled money, you could say. CDS's were worth up to $62 Trillion dollars in December 2007 (Bloomberg mentioned often today).

Update: Oct. 5, 2008 - CBS 60 Minutes report about Credit Default Swap. Transcript is in comments.

GV families mandate for more date openings

Glendale News Press reports Grand View families are wanting more date openings at cemetery. more>

"Attorneys representing the families suing owners of Grand View Memorial Park will ask a judge today to mandate the cemetery’s opening to the public for future dates, including Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Attorneys want Judge Anthony Mohr to grant public openings of the Glendale’s oldest cemetery on Oct. 12 and 26, Nov. 9, 23 and 27, Dec. 21 and 25, and Jan. 1 and 6, according to a court report. If granted, the cemetery hours would be from noon to 4 p.m.

“I don’t think that’s going to be a problem,” said Attorney Paul Ayers, who represents the families.

Ayers hasn’t received opposition from cemetery operator Moshe Goldsman about the request for future openings, he said, adding that Goldsman’s attorney David Baum has volunteered at the openings."

September 19, 2008 - Court orders more dates open for cemetery
"A civil court judge on Thursday ordered an additional nine openings at Grand View Memorial Park to allow visitors access to their loved ones’ graves during the holidays.

Judge Anthony Mohr approved the opening of the cemetery on Oct. 12 and 26, Nov. 9, 23 and 27, Dec. 21 and 25, and Jan. 1 and 6, according to a court report. The cemetery will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on those dates.

“It’s been three years that people haven’t been allowed to get out there and visit on the holidays,” said Attorney Mary Der-Parseghian, who represents families suing the cemetery." - Glendale Press

September 17th updates...

September 17, 2008 - Found this on the internet recently :
11110 Edna Purviance Drive
7 Phase F Lovelock NV
I am trying to check this out to see if this is just a named road on private property, or an official name. The 'Drive' is onto a desert lot near Lovelock, so could be a privately named road or just a 'name catcher' for the web. I will see if I get word back.

September 17, 2008 - Web 'Sighting'
I don't know if it was the real 1938 film of Education de Prince, but a short clip was on youtube, but removed by youtube.

Reason given for it being removed states:
"removed due to terms of use violation"

I didn't see this clip and it is NOT the film version Edna Purviance starred in 1927, but I have been looking for this 1938 film too, to compare to images in the current collection. I will keep searching for both.

I do think if Edna's 1927 version is still around, it maybe hiding in a France or other European archive or film collection, with managers who may not know what it is or even know they have it.

So if you surf the web for Education de Prince and see the youtube link, you will see an image, apparently from the 1938 version of the film (NOT the 1927), but the video gone.

September 15, 2008
- If you followed my sites over the years, you know I am a huge fan of The Rainbow Orchid, by the talented UK artist and writer, Garen Ewing. Today, The Rainbow Orchid has its own official page on Egmont site.

First volume of The Rainbow Orchid will be published by Egmont in 2009.

UPDATE APRIL 1, 2009 - The Rainbow Orchid by Garen Ewing is schedule to release August 4, 2009. more>

Set in the 1920s, this beautifully drawn story would make a great addition to anyones collection.

I will be placing updates on this project.

Also, you can catch Garen's work in future editions of the UK comic The DFC. He will have a series called 'Charlie Jefferson and the Tomb of Nazaleod'. Garen is scheduled to be part of The DFC panel at the Birmingham International Comics Show, the weekend of Oct. 4-5. (Interview about The DFC.)

September 13, 2008 - Written records of Charlie Chaplin's childhood has been released. more>

"Chris Blackwood, a spokesman for the LMA said: ‘People have been speaking of Charlie’s time in a workhouse for a long time but this is the first actual concrete proof. As the record shows, he was put on a diet for very young children and it would have been the worst diet.

‘He would have had the bare minimum to keep him alive – gruel, porridge or basic cereals." - Daily Mail UK

"The animation we were doing was not limited, but stylized," he recalled in an interview in 1986.

"When you analyze Chaplin's shorts, you realize people don't move that way--he stylized his movements.

We were going to do the same thing for animation. We were going to animate the work of Cobean, Steinberg--all the great cartoonists of the moment--and move them as the designs dictated." - Los Angeles Times

September 14th... well, something will start...

It's Politics month at TCM

With conventions, debates and a very important election coming in about eight weeks, TCM is showing a series of films dealing with politics. While there are many interesting ones, here are my pick of four to see: The Best Man, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Abe Lincoln in Illinois and Gabriel Over the White House.

See this link for more films on this topic each Wednesday night in September, and be sure to be ready to vote come November 4th.
