It's amazing such tangible items from the film still exist! Chaplin got in quite a lot of trouble with the IRS in 1932-1933 for expensive film and studio items being kept by himself and close employees, most notably his brother Syd - I wonder if this cape fell into that category? Ironically, it was this IRS trouble that led to the destruction of the "Sea Gull" negative.
I do know Edna had to prove to the IRS during the making of The Kid, that she had to provided her own clothes for that film. There are records on this in Edna's items.
Also, Edna mentioned having to buy clothes for other films during her career. So I don't know how this cape figured into that. It was handmade and somewhat quickly from the switching in it.
And about the film being destroyed for taxes. It didn't settle the tax problems for that year at all. He continued to have tax issues for that same period for many years to follow.
I had an Edna fan write in about how it felt to put on Edna's cape. Well, the first thing that came to mind was just how small of a lady she was. The second though was this cape was most likely never worn except in this film. It was in mint condition (for its age) and super clean. Thanks for writing in... - L
